How a Proven Hands Full-Grain Leather Work Belt Is Made Step By Step
At Proven Hands, we make heavy duty full-grain leather work belts one at a time, by hand, using time-honored tools. When you buy from us, you're not just getting a belt, you’re getting a tool built to work as hard as you do.
Here’s exactly how each Proven Hands leather belt is hand-crafted, and why the process matters.

Step 1: Hand-Cutting the Leather
It all starts with premium full-grain leather hides. Not bonded leather, not “genuine leather,” but the strongest cut of cowhide available.
We cut each strap by hand using a strap cutter, making sure the exact width and clean, even cuts. Machine-made belts often suffer from inconsistent thickness, poor grain alignment, or hidden fillers. Not here.
Step 2: Punching the Buckle End
Next, we shape the buckle end:
-
A rounded end punch gives the belt its clean tip.
-
An oblong punch creates the center buckle slot. Just long enough for the prong to sit flat and secure.
-
A round hole punch is used to prepare the holes for buckle hardware.
These tools might seem simple, but every punch is placed by hand, with precision.

This is where factory-made mass produced belts often cut corners. But for us, the goal is a perfect fit, strength, and long-term durability.
Step 3: Skiving the Belt End for Foldover
Here’s where many belt makers skip a key comfort step.
We skive (thin down) the belt tip where it folds around the buckle. Why? To reduce bulk. Without this, that area gets stiff and bulky. And sometimes, it can dig into your gut when you bend, kneel, or sit. (Who wants that?)
Skiving the fold means your belt wears more naturally and comfortably. It’s a small step, but it makes a big difference on the job.
Step 4: Custom Sizing for a Perfect Fit
We don’t do “one size fits all.” Every Proven Hands belt is measured and cut to your specific size. We use an end punch to shape the tail and an oblong hole punch for the belt holes.

The oblong holes aren’t just for looks, they help the belt lay flatter against your waist and reduce stress on the holes. Round holes tend to stretch, deform, or even tear over time, especially on thicker leather.
Ours stay tight, clean, and tough.
Step 5: Burnishing the Edges with Beeswax
After cutting and punching, we finish each belt edge by hand.
We burnish the edges with natural beeswax, sourced from U.S. honeybees. This gives the edge a smooth, polished feel and adds a layer of water resistance to protect the leather.
Most belt companies skip this or use cheap edge paint. That kind of shortcut doesn’t last, especially outside in the mud and rain.
Our beeswax burnish isn’t just about looks. It helps prevent fraying, cracking, and water damage.
